Fort of the Three Kings

History and heritage on the banks of the Potengi River

The Reis Magos Fort is a historic landmark in Natal, built by the Portuguese in 1598 to defend the Brazilian coast against foreign invasions. With its strategic location between the sea and the Potengi River, the fort was essential for the security of the region during the colonial period. Its star-shaped structure and privileged position helped the city to develop, although in 1633 it was taken by the Dutch and renamed Caulen Castle.

Today, the Forte dos Reis Magos is one of Natal’s main tourist attractions, offering an immersion in the history of colonial Brazil. Next to the imposing Newton Navarro Bridge, which connects the city to the north coast, the site also offers a beautiful view of the river meeting the sea and is ideal for activities such as abseiling and hiking. Visiting the fort is a unique opportunity to explore the city’s rich cultural and military heritage.
